On October 14th, 1998, minutes after the beginning of midnight shift, the dispatcher at the Harrodsburg Police Department received a call about a suspicious subject in the Trim Masters Corporation parking lot. The only two officers assigned to work this shift were Regina Nickles and Erick Barkman, who both responded to this call. Officer Nickles and Officer Barkman arrived at the scene at the same time, Officer Nickles coming in from the south end and Officer Barkman coming in from the north end. They both spotted the suspect in the field located across the road from the parking lot they were dispatched to go to. They stopped, exited their cruisers, and as they were attempting to approach the suspect from opposite directions, he rose up and fired the two shots that took her life (both shots struck her in areas not covered by her ballistic vest). Officer Barkman quickly returned fire, wounding the suspect, and then placed him under arrest.

Regina had a calling to help a town,
She was the best from all around.
When in need of help;
She was always there.
From East to West –
North to South;
No matter where she was;
She could always be found.
She came –
She conquered;
Now her absence will be felt
From all in this town.
"Our Fallen Angel" will always
be remembered for her kindness
and friendship,
To all she touched in so many ways,
In this tiny town.
Regina will always be
"Harrodsburg's Fallen Angel."
We all love you and will miss
You a lot.
